Our little town of Forestville, which is about five minutes from Gantz Family Vineyards, is so small that if you blink while driving through it, you might miss it. However, if you let your taste buds lead you, the town will surprise you with some wonderful food, as well as efficient, friendly and welcoming service. Here's a map to help guide you. 1. Driving through town from south to north on Highway 116, we first encounter Carr’s Drive In (6533 Covey Road), where you can get good, authentic, made-while-you-wait, drive-in food. Their wall menu is large, but our must-haves (as well as the must-haves of everyone who visits us) are Carr's hamburgers, shakes and fries. Salty and crisp, the fries are absolutely addicting.

2. Our next stop is the home of my favorite tri-tip sandwich, Twist Eatery (6536 Front St.). They make a beautiful serenade out of what is usually a fairly run-of-the meal sandwich. I’m told all their other offerings are just as good, but I’m having a hard time dragging myself away from this one.

3. For a great, hearty meal of authentic Mexican food, La Rosa Market (6555 Front St.) is our stop of choice.  We’ve tried their tamales, burritos, tacos and all are wonderful. They even have a low-fat burrito (except for the soft, lovely tortilla) with fresh veggies and grilled chicken that is delicious and satisfying.

4. Beth at Nightingale Breads (6665 Front St.) offers some of the most delicious breads around. Her baguettes are practically a staple in our house and we usually have to snag one of her special seasonal offerings at the same time. We try not to hurry because if we’re lucky enough to catch her during a lull, we can share a short chat and the opportunity to surround ourselves with the wonderful aromas of her bakery.

5. On our way out of town toward River Road, we can always stop at Speer’s Market (7891 Mirabel Road).  With a wonderful meat and deli department, and fresh and varied produce, Speer’s is a favorite of Russian River Valley’s summer guests. It is also well-stocked with staples for the quick trip to the market.

We understand we will have a new food neighbor soon. Canneti (6675 Front St.), billed as “Roadhouse Italiana", is anticipated by all of us with great excitement. This little review from Bite Club Eats says it all.

So if you’re driving through Forestville, best to do it around meal time. You won’t be disappointed!
